Pic Playback: KeKe Wyatt sings a hole into the D.C. City Winery

Critically underrated but super talented songbird Keke Wyatt made her way back to the DMV area for a concert over at the D.C. City Winery on Thursday, July 21.

For a show full of fem energy, songwriter turned artist Kissie Lee was the selected opening act for this concert. Described as the “girl next door”, Kissie’s sound is bound to bring you back to those 90’s R&B vibes, which she let us get a sneak peak of with her women’s empowerment anthem “Always Something“.

Fresh off of just delivering her newest bundle of joy, this R&B diva Wyatt clearly shows no signs of slowing down, or vocal distress, as her voice sounded as crystal clear as it did some 20+ years ago when she first burst onto the scene. Many of her classic love songs were wrapped up into the setlist, including “Fall In Love“, “Lie Under You“, “You and I“, “My First Love”, but it was her cover of Patti LaBelle’s “If Only You Knew” that really had people slapping the table and making that stank face…you know the face when something sounds too good to be true. Over the years, Keke has truly made this rendition her own, so much so, that you would think it was a song that she penned herself.

With a voice as powerful as hers, you already know that she was one of those young girls who was raised in the church, so what better way to show her appreciation for the gift of gospel music than by performing a spine tingling version of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow“.

As a viable show closer, she took her top ten hit “Nothing In This World” and turned it into an extended jam session, allowing her band comprised of drummer Ben Cuyler, keyboardist Adam Faulk, guitarist Pup, bassist Gee and musical director Showtyme Brooks to all flex their musical muscle. Before we knew it, we were getting a two-minute countdown until the show end, but that wasn’t before Keke herself hopped on the drums and broke out into an impromptu instrumental version of Bruno Mars’ “Finesse“.
