Pic Playback: Brian McKnight Has Crazy Love For Washington, D.C.

Four sold out shows in two nights, who’s capable of doing that? Well apparently one of the most notable voices from the 90’s did that. Brian McKnight took the City Winery in Washington, D.C. by storm on the dates of April 28 & 29 for an intimate night of love music that not many can try to duplicate.
When you’re a vocalist as well versed and talented as Mr. McKnight, it’s a simple task for you to try some out of the box tactics that your run of the mill R&B singer wouldn’t dare try. You might be asking yourself what we’re referring to. The first song to open the show was a cover of Marvin Gaye’s classic hit “Sexual Healing“. If you know anything about music, you’ll know that D.C. is Gaye’s hometown and we take him as a big deal, so to not only cover one of his songs, but open your concert with it, you’ve got to come correct. Well let’s just say that it was a homerun, because the spin that Brian put on the song was just enough to make it his own, but still true to the original.
To keep the level of veteran showmanship up, was the fact that he was the ONLY talent present on stage, no band nor backup singers in sight, just him, his keyboard and his guitars. This was pretty amazing to watch in action as he had to keep the timing of the music AND perform all of his vocals. Obviously it’s these same vocals that kept all of these shows packed to capacity, and sounded nearly identical to the studio versions of “Find Myself in You“, “Crazy Love“, “Anytime“, “6,8,12“, and “One Last Cry“.
He further showed the fact that 90’s R&B acts are the GOAT, when he also covered songs by Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Prince, and Michael Jackson! For his final act of the night, he decided to close out with the 2001 song “Still“. We DO have one gripe though in that he didn’t choose to perform “You Should Be Mine“, which is my personal favorite song of his, but I guess I’ll give him a pass since he did give us an otherwise night full of greatness.
