Lucky Daye’s “Candydrip” Tour Leaves A Sweet Imprint On The Fillmore Silver Spring

This past weekend in the DMV was one that was as close to perfection as we’ve seen in a long while. With the factors of “outside being back opened”, the weather being absolutely gorgeous, and nestled within the Easter holiday, there wasn’t much more that we could ask for, or was there? The addition of the Lucky Daye “Candydrip” Tour pulling up to the Fillmore Silver Spring was the extra cherry on top that we couldn’t wait to consume.

With tickets already being sold out for months, his recent Grammy win only heightened the anticipation for this show. Arriving to the venue, the line was wrapped around the corner and stacked full of an eclectic group of young music lovers. Once the doors opened, people made a mad dash in to try to claim their spot in the rightful front row in hopes of being able to catch some “drip” from Daye. While waiting, the mood was being set by a DJ who played many mellowed out songs to help you get centered before the supporting act took the stage. Relative newcomer to the music scene, Joyce Wrice was just what the doctor ordered to add a bit of extra flavor to the show. Opening up and performing for the first time in a new region can sometimes be a daunting task, but Wrice seemed totally unfazed, as she worked the stage and audience as if it were her headlining performance. Part of the magic in our eyes was due to the essence that she invoked. During her 45 minute set, she reminded us of some performers from yesteryear. From her music that clearly drew inspiration from 90’s R&B, to shaking a leg with her four female background dancers, and even down to her costuming, the young beauty gave us a product that not only we could get into, but made us want to go home so that we could Youtube her.

After a brief intermission, now was the time for our first experience with Lucky Daye in a live presentation. Before he even uttered one note, his three-person band kicked things right into gear with a mini jam session that would have the most experienced musicians turning their heads. As we were all enamored by the lights and music, Lucky Daye smoothly appears on stage, diving right into the title track of his latest album, “Candydrip“, before uncovering other tracks from the project.

We often feel that it’s necessary to catch an artist in concert at the beginning stage of their career (within the first five years or so) since it allows them to offer up full length performances of their songs, versus chopping them down to shortened versions that are only relegated to medleys as their catalogs get deeper. To hear favorites such as “Painted”, “Guess”, “Misunderstood”, “Roll Some Mo”, “Used To Be”, and “NWA” in the way that they were originally intended to be heard gave the fans so much delight.

One thing to note is that the ladies CERTAINLY came out for this show, and we understand why. The persona that he portrays is one with a noticeable sexual tone, that also translates to his music as well. At one point during his set, I thought a woman behind me was going to lose her mind as she screamed “TAKE ALL OF IT IT OFF!” as threw his silk shirt to floor. He played into the whole sex symbol factor as he uttered the lines “I don’t care ’bout who’s around, I just wanna lay you down” from “Fuckin’ Sound” and grinding up on Joyce Wright for their duet of “Fallin’ In Love“.

Albeit this was a modern day R&B concert, there was something about his energy that gave us so much more than that. For those of you unfamiliar, he is a multi-hyphenated artist whereas not only does he just sing, but he also writes, tells stories and plays an instrument to help create the total package, which in some parts of the show, gave a bit of a comparison to Prince.

On each stop of this tour trek, Daye has been known to invite special guests on stage with him to keep the dynamics fresh and interesting, and the surprise that we received was something that totally blew everyone out of the water and losing their minds. While singing his sultry “Love You Too Much“, reigning R&B princess Jazmine Sullivan appeared on stage for a sweet serenade and slow dance, that eventually transitioned into an impromptu duet of Sullivan’s “Lions, Tigers & Bears”, which he claimed was his favorite song in the World.

It was no better choice than for him to close out the evening with his current hit single “Over,” which samples the beautiful chord progressions from Musiq Souldchild’s “Halfcrazy“. Arguably the most anticipated performance of the evening, hearing the crowd sing this in unison was a moment that we’re sure made Daye feel proud of himself. If there was anything that we learned, it’s that Lucky Daye is well on his way to taking that New Orleans swag, and stamping it all over the music industry for years to come.
