Pic Playback: The Sugarhill Gang Live at City Winery DC 4-8-22

There’s just something about old school hip-hop that we just can’t deny, and when you’ve got the original pioneers of the genre, you can’t go wrong.

The Sugar Hill Gang is celebrating of over 40 years of music with their one night only stint at the City Winery in Washington, DC on Friday, March 8. The group who is currently comprised of Guy “Master Gee” O’Brien, Henry “Henn Dogg” Williams and DJ T. Dynasty still knows how to cold rock a party, just as if it was 1980.

With most in their late 50’s, the amount of stamina and excitement the gang put into their hour set was incredible, performing “Apache,” “8th Wonder” and “Living in the Fast Lane”.

Finally, of course, they dropped into “Rapper’s Delight” and the crowd went nuts, getting up on chairs, screaming the words out loud, invoking every bit of their younger years from when the song was a hit on the radio. To talk about the crowd, it was refreshing to see all walks of life in attendance, ranging from every age group, race, color and creed.

The fantastic crowd interaction and the positive vibes truly made you feel like you were reliving hip-hop history.
