Review: Sevyn Streeter At The Howard Theatre
February 24th, 2014 fans lined up outside of the historic Howard Theatre dressed in their finest prepared to enjoy an evening with singer/songwriter Sevyn Streeter. Doors opened at 6 p.m. to a beautifully designed venue that for this particular show was standing room only. The upper level of the venue had been closed for the event and seating available on the main level was reserved for label executives and the sponsoring radio station. The two hours between the doors opening and the start of the show gave individuals an opportunity to mingle, order food or drinks and enjoy listening to music supplied by the DJ.
A minute before 8 p.m. the stage was graced by opening act and DC/Maryland/Virginia native Reesa Renee followed by RCA recording artist Mali Music. One of the many shows that I have attended that have started on time, love it! The show was definitely a diverse set of artist that all brought their own unique flare to the stage. Reesa Renee and Mali Music both delivering amazing messages of individuality, love and togetherness.
In the final hour of the show, personalities of the sponsoring radio station were brought to the stage to introduce the headlining act; Sevyn Streeter. The lights dimmed and the curtains were drawn to reveal a bare stage. I took that as a message saying, “I don’t need anything fancy to tear down this stage”. In the middle of the intro music two dancers made their way to the stage followed by Sevyn. She opened with her own energy laced version of August Alsina’s hit “I Luv This”, followed by a tribute to Aaliyah and Chris Brown’s “No Bullsh*t”. This set did not venture to far from her previous stint on The Rebellious Soul Tour but after her performances of “I Like It” and “I Should Have Cheated” by Keyshia Cole she performed a new track off of her début EP “Call Me Crazy, But” titled “N.E.X.T”. The final song was, of course, her explosive single “It Won’t Stop”. Overall the performance was great but seemed to lack energy in areas.
Following the show there were quite a few murmurs of disappointed fans who did not think that Streeter performed enough new material and I do understand their frustration. Hopefully this is something that will be further implemented in future dates. Throughout the entire concert there was a good balance of talented individuals and I thoroughly enjoyed them all.
