Former Prince protege and all around consummate musician, Ms. Sheila E. still has people moving to the beat of her own drum some 30+ years into her career.
On Friday, July 21, 2017, the organizers of Baltimore’s Artscape brought Ms. Escovedo to the forefront of the event by establishing her as the headliner of its opening night. Artscape is America’s largest free arts festival, attracting 350,000+ attendees over three days.
The bowl area where the main stage was seated started to fill up early around 6 PM, while opening act April Sampe warmed the crowd up. By 7:30 PM, when I looked back behind me, there was no “green” in sight, as all of the empty space on the hill was covered by eager festival goers who were ready for a free show, and a show is what they got.
From the moment Sheila E. stepped on stage, she gave the crowd exactly what they wanted…a sample of that Minneapolis sound that Prince made famous. Not only did she cover a number of Prince’s famed hits, but she also brought a few of her own tracks as well, from yesteryear and today.
One of them being her newest single “Bailar“, lifted from her upcoming album “Iconic”. In this new single, which is totally a latin infused, pop dance track which explicitly states you need to get up and dance, and that’s what she did, was make the people dance. During this song, she invited about 20 lucky fans on stage with her to show off their hottest moves, and you know when people get the chance to get on stage with an artist, they show off.
Her set closed out with her biggest hit, the infectious 80’s hit song “The Glamorous Life“. After about 90 minutes in running time, it still looks as if Sheila E. is absolutely continuing to live the glamorous life…not through fortunes or riches, but through her musical legacy.
